EDIT 2: You know what’s worse than everything else I talked about here? People being needlessly mean and rude. Even if someone clearly breaks a boundary here, don’t be rude to them. That just creates more negativity. Either ignore it or politely correct them. Don’t be hostile. I absolutely hate reading arguments and rude comments, doesn’t matter if they’re “defending me” or whatever. I’m very nearly an adult, I don’t need nor want a bunch of kids yelling at people for my sake. Be decent or just don’t talk. —— EDIT: I feel like people are misunderstanding this. Being friendly is not the problem. Saying hi isn’t a problem (though I don’t usually respond to purely “hi” comments since I’m not huge on small talk). Talking to me isn’t a problem. Being nice is never a problem. The problem I think mostly stems from people who are fans of mine, but don’t want to come off as infatuated (since they know most scratchers don’t like that), so they try being overly familiar when I’ve never talked to them before, or only talked in order to answer a question they had. There is a minority of people this applies to. Chances are, this isn’t about you. Most people are pretty good at being friendly without crossing any sort of parasocial boundary. Saying hi is fine. Asking non invasive questions is fine. Leaving kind messages is fine. Saying you enjoy EA is fine. Making fan art is very sweet and of course fine. Acting like I know you when I don’t isn’t fine. Spamming my comments trying to get me to respond to you isn’t fine. Trying to find personal information about me is very weird and not fine. —— Not a big deal by any means, but try not to act overly familiar with me if I don’t know you. This is just a general internet thing people seem to struggle with I think. Especially since I’m older than the majority of people commenting, it’s just a little uncomfy when people seem to assume that I’ll chat like besties with them out of nowhere. I might be friendly in comments, in fact I try to be! But being friendly and being friends are two different things. If I’m nice to you, it’s because I try to be nice to people in general, not that I am trying to befriend you. I don’t say this to be rude, I say this to be clear on expectations from me. To be clear, I am also not a huge fan of people treating me like I’m some celebrity either. I’m literally just another stranger on the internet. And just like you’d treat any stranger, don’t just walk up to me and ask me the details of my mental health or assume my exact situation. I’m not talking about anyone in particular with this, it’s more of a general thing. In general, if I don’t follow you, I don’t know you. Even if you have read my comic, like my projects, and feel like you know me from that, I still don’t know you. That’s the definition of a parasocial relationship. Ofc you’re still free to talk to me and ask me questions, just do so in the way you would if you were talking to a person you didn’t know well in real life. For example, asking “what’s your favorite food?” is perfectly alright! And so is “what’s your opinion on the political state of France?” Well wishes are very sweet and I appreciate them too. (Though as a side note, I am an atheist, so saying “I’ll pray for you” feels a little odd to me? Like I won’t stop you, but it doesn’t really mean anything to me. Save your prayers for the people who you know will appreciate them :) ). But like you don’t need to know some things, and you aren’t entitled to know everything. And that’s alright. To clarify, there’s nothing wrong with being friendly! Being friendly is great! I just get a little uncomfortable with people acting like they know me when they don’t. Also this is more of a me specific thing, but I really don’t like unsolicited advice from people I don’t know. Ofc to the people I do follow, I’m aware of your existence, so this project doesn’t apply to you as much. Mostly because I trust you’re mature enough to not cross any boundaries.
