How To Play

✎ hey there! I’m Vi, and I’m here to show you how I do art! please keep in mind that I am in no way a professional on this topic, I’m just a random teenager on the internet trying to draw haha~ ✎ anyways, this is just the way I personally like to go about doing art! I use the program Procreate on my iPad, and I use an Apple Pencil. However, this way of doing art can be adapted to most digital drawing programs! ✎ bear with me here, as I haven’t done something like this in a while haha! ✎ also, the character, for those wondering, belongs to @-add-some-color-, who is an amazing artist you should totally check out!! :0 this is for an art trade with them ^^ ✎ for your information, this piece took me around 45 minutes, including writing out the tutorial pieces. :) the time a piece takes you doesn’t really matter, but some people like to know! :D ✎ space, arrows, or clicking the screen will advance you to the next/previous slide! ✎ follow along down here if you wish! I have written the steps out again and gone more in-depth on some of them. :) ⠀ 1 ✎ using an airbrush (or sometimes a paint or pencil ⠀ ⠀ tool) I sketch out what I want the piece to look ⠀ ⠀ like! it doesn’t have to be neat, but //you// need to ⠀ ⠀ understand what’s going on haha! ⠀ 2 ✎ then, you pick your favorite lines! go over those ⠀ ⠀ [on a new layer!!] with a pen tool. you can make ⠀ ⠀ any corrections you like on your way. :D try to ⠀ ⠀ vary your line thickness wherever and whenever ⠀ ⠀ you can!! ⠀ 3 ✎ hide the sketch layer. ⠀ 4 ✎ duplicate the lineart! I go and delete this layer ⠀ ⠀ later, but I did it just in case I messed up on the ⠀ ⠀ next step. :D hide the bottom one ^^ I put my ⠀ ⠀ reference in the canvas at this point also. ⠀ ⠀ (Procreate has a ‘reference’ feature but for the ⠀ ⠀ sake of simplicity I just put it directly in the frame.) ⠀ 5 ✎ I made a new layer here, setting it on clipping ⠀ ⠀ directly above the lineart layer. clipping is a setting ⠀ ⠀ most art programs have that makes sure whatever ⠀ ⠀ you draw stays within the boundaries of the layer ⠀ ⠀ beneath it. :D ⠀ 6 ✎ then, using darker shades of the colors I will later ⠀ ⠀ fill those areas in with, I go over various parts of ⠀ ⠀ the lineart. after you’re finished, you can merge ⠀ ⠀ the layer down. (on procreate, tap the layer and it ⠀ ⠀ should have a setting called ‘merge down’ :D) ⠀ 7 ✎ duplicate the lineart layer! I do this whenever I ⠀ ⠀ color so you don’t get messy lineart. ⠀ 8 ✎ then I color in that bottom layer! now that I’ve ⠀ ⠀ finished, I hide the reference. :) ⠀ 9 ✎ as you can see, I removed any unneeded layers. ⠀ ⠀ then I make a new one for shading! ⠀ 10 ✎ I set this layer on clipping mask, as well as the ⠀ ⠀ lineart layer! ⠀ 11 ✎ I use a dark color (that is not black or gray!) to ⠀ ⠀ shade. I use a paint brush called ‘round brush’ ⠀ ⠀ but any watercolor works too. if you do it right, ⠀ ⠀ airbrush can be acceptable, but it’s best to steer ⠀ ⠀ clear of airbrush shading as a general rule. ⠀ 12 ✎ [ see 10 ] ⠀ 13 ✎ put your shading where you want it, keeping in ⠀ ⠀ mind your light source and what direction the ⠀ ⠀ shadows will fall in. this can be messy, we’ll fix it ⠀ ⠀ up later! (no, you don’t necessarily have to do the ⠀ ⠀ dark shading first, that’s just what I usually do!) ⠀ 14 ✎ now I grab the smudge tool. on some programs, ⠀ ⠀ this is a brush setting, but it should work the ⠀ ⠀ same way. ⠀ 15 ✎ I blend the shading until it looks how I want it! on ⠀ ⠀ his fur, I made the shading have somewhat of a ⠀ ⠀ hairy/furry texture, so do that if drawing animals, ⠀ ⠀ hair, etc. ^^ ⠀ 16 ✎ set the shading layer to multiply! if it’s too dark, ⠀ ⠀ you can adjust the opacity. personally, I like ⠀ ⠀ pretty dark shading, but whichever you prefer! ⠀ 17 ✎ using the same process for light shading, I put ⠀ ⠀ that on. the only difference for this step is that I ⠀ ⠀ use a lighter color and set the layer (MAKE SURE ⠀ ⠀ IT’S A NEW, SEPARATE LAYER!!) to add. ⠀ 18 ✎ me ranting about add. [seriously, I love it. use it.] ⠀ ⠀ my add gets a waffle uwu ⠀ 19 ✎ I did a background, but I’m not authorized to ⠀ ⠀ give you a tutorial on that because I’m honestly ⠀ ⠀ terrible at them. haha. ⠀ 20 ✎ finished product!! :D ✎ if you try drawing using this method, totally shoot me a link or remix the project!
