Game Introduction

➻ Welcome to a Guide to Cat Genetics! This guide explains everything in Sparrow's Garden along with added visuals. Although knowing the genetic code for your cat is not essential for roleplaying, understanding genetics is a great way to understand your character in more depth and can be helpful in designing accurate litters if desired. Link to Sparrow's Garden: https://sparrows-garden.com/genetics.html ⊱ ────── {⋅. ✯ .⋅} ────── ⊰ How to use this guide: ☆ View this in full screen for the best visuals. ☆ Hover your mouse over each part of the “Example Genetic Code” (EGC for short). I have grouped them to make it easier to digest. ☆ Click on a part of the EGC to view an in-depth description of each gene. ☆ Hover over the “Visuals/Notes” on the bottom to see pictures, examples, and notes. Hovering over anything other than the “Visuals/Notes” will close it. ☆ Back and Next arrows let you move back and forth between the slides. ☆ Click the black cat labeled “exit” to exit the slides and back to the EGC. ☆ If it glitches, just click the green flag or click the black cat and then go back in. ⊱ ────── {⋅. ✯ .⋅} ────── ⊰ Basic Definitions: ✯ Gene: The section of DNA that codes for something. For example: fur length gene. ✯ Allele: A part of the gene that codes for a specific characteristic. For example: In the fur length gene, there is a L allele that codes for short fur and the l allele that codes for long fur. ✯ Homozygous: The gene has two of the same allele. For example: LL or ll ✯ Heterozygous: The gene has different alleles. For example: Ll ✯ Dominant: This means the allele will show even when the cat has one copy of it. For example: L allele for short fur is dominant. Therefore if the cat has the gene Ll or LL, the cat will show short fur. ✯ Recessive: This means the allele will not show when the cat has only one copy of it. For example: l allele for long fur is recessive. Therefore if the cat has the gene Ll, the cat will not show long fur. Long fur will only show if the cat has two copies of the allele, ll. ✯ Phenotype: The physical characteristic that a cat actually shows. For example: a cat may have the gene for tabby, but has the gene for dominant white (which masks all colors in white), therefore the cat's phenotype would be all white with no shown tabby. ⊱ ────── {⋅. ✯ .⋅} ────── ⊰ References & Credits: [1] https://www.hillspet.com/cat-care/cat-breeds/selkirk-rex [2] https://pawversity.com/breeds/devon-rex-and-cornish-rex-cats [3] https://cattime.com/cat-breeds/laperm-cats#/slide/1 [4] https://allaboutcats.com/lykoi-cat [5] https://excitedcats.com/classic-tabby-vs-mackerel-tabby/ [6] https://felinegenetics.missouri.edu/feline-research-projects/silver-and-golden [7] http://messybeast.com/gene-symbols.htm [8] http://messybeast.com/wide-band.htm [9] http://messybeast.com/amber-russet.htm [10] http://messybeast.com/karpati-transylvanian.htm [11] http://messybeast.com/roan-tweed.htm [12] https://pets.thenest.com/tell-japanese-bobtail-manx-cat-9004.html [13] http://messybeast.com/sunshine-kurilean-golden.htm [14] http://messybeast.com/mocha-colour.htm [15] https://cfa.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/color-pattern-chart.pdf A giant visual of almost everything in this guide! I totally recommend taking the time to look through this; it’s a lot at first glance, but it will definitely help a lot with visuals!
